Why are there four single frame flashes of Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) prior to The Narrator actually meeting him?

As astute viewers will have observed, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) appears in the film six times prior to The Narrator actually meeting him on the plane. Four of these appearances are single frame flashes, which director David Fincher refers to on his DVD commentary as "subliminal Brads" (a single frame is 1/24 of a second in duration, just slow enough for the human eye to register on an unconscious level). The first occurs when The Narrator is standing at the photocopier in work, trying to stay awake; the second is when the doctor (Richmond Arquette) is telling The Narrator that to see what real pain is, he needs to attend the testicular cancer support group; the third is as the group leader (George Maguire) gives his opening address at that group; the fourth is as The Narrator watches Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) walking down an alleyway (the fifth and sixth appearances of Durden are in the hotel welcome video (he is the furthest waiter on the right) and on a walkway in an airport).
